The Windom Pirates earned the third and final Region 13C spot Sunday in the Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament, as the Pirates pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth to top the Hadley Buttermakers, 1-0.
With the victory, Windom prevailed in the best-of-three series between the two teams, two games to one. The triumph came a day after the Buttermakers forced the third game in the series by edging the Pirates, 6-5, in an 11-inning battle in Hadley.
Windom will be the region’s third seed in the state amateur baseball tourney, which will open on the weekend of Aug. 20-22 in Waconia, Chaska and Hamburg. The Pirates will also be able to draft two pitchers from other Region 13-C teams that have been eliminated from the playoffs.
In other Region 13C amateur baseball playoff action, the Luverne Redbirds defeated the Milroy Irish 9-6 on Friday night to win the best-of-three series between the teams, two games to none. Luverne will be the top seed from the region and receive a bye in the first round of the state tourney. Milroy, meanwhile, will be the second seed out of the region.
