WHS golfer Powers moves on in sectional tourney play

Competing in the first day of the Section 3AA boys golf tournament Thursday at Oakdale Golf Club, the Worthington Trojans’ Logan Powers qualified for Day 2 of the tourney thanks to a round of 84.


As a team, Worthington finished 13th out of 16 schools. New London-Spicer was first at 315 strokes, with Luverne and Marshall tied for second at 324. The Trojans, meanwhile, completed play with a cumulative total of 356 strokes. The Cardinals’ Owen Sudenga was second of all individual competitors with a 74, and the Tigers’ Luke Ehlers was third with a 75.


In addition to Powers’ 84, other scores for WHS were Tyler Jaycox with an 86, Andrew Mulder with a 92, Spenser Braaksma with a 94, Wesley Widboom with a 97 and Spenser Nickel with a 98.


Powers will be back at Oakdale Golf Club for Day Two of the sectional tournament next Wednesday.

In high school baseball Thursday, WHS traveled to Le Sueur-Henderson-St. Peter and was defeated 9-0 in five innings.


Le Sueur-Henderson-St. Peter scored two runs in the bottom of the first and six more in the second to quickly put the game out of reach. The Trojans managed just a pair of hits in the game. Mason Schutz hit a double for Worthington and Kaleb Knothe had a single.


Thursday’s game was the Trojans’ final outing of the regular season. Their next action will be Wednesday in the sectional tournament, with an opponent and location to be announced.

The Worthington Trojans girls softball team’s season came to an end Thursday in the Section 2AAA tournament at Caswell Park in North Mankato.


WHS, the No. 8 seed in the tournament, took on top-seeded Mankato East in its opening game and was blanked 18-0 in four innings. After grabbing a 3-0 edge after one inning, the Scarlets scored seven times in the second and added eight more in the third.


Bailey Ponto, who pitched for Worthington, and Hannah McNab had the only Trojan hits. WHS was hurt by eight errors in the field.


In a losers’ bracket game that followed, St. Peter scored 10 runs in the bottom of the third inning and went on to record a 14-1, five-inning triumph over the Trojans. Ponto connected for a double and Brooklyn Bretzman a single for Worthington’s hits; McNab scored the lone Trojan run. WHS had nine errors in the field against the Saints.

In Section 2A baseball Thursday, it was: Martin County West 7, BOLD 6; Mankato Loyola 12, Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda 2; and Madelia 7, Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey 4.


In additional Section 2AAA softball play, Marshall topped St. Peter 1-0, then lost to Mankato East 3-0.


In Section 2AA softball, Fairmont beat Medford 7-1.
