Gach wins twice for WHS, as does Farris for HL-O/F, at Pipestone meet

The Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda and Worthington Trojans' boys track and field teams placed third and fourth, respectively, on Tuesday in the 13-team Bob Nangle Relays at Pipestone High School. MCC was first with 123.5 points; the Coyotes had 83 and WHS 82.


Worthington's Tetlouch Gach turned in a pair of first-place finishes, taking the 110 hurdles in 15.64 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 41.07. Austin Kinser captured the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 2:03.49, the 4x200 replay team also placed first in 1:37.12 and Caleb Meyer won the high jump with an effort of 6-2. Also for WHS, Hudson Scheepstra was third in the 300 hurdles.


For Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda, Matthew Stapek won the 1600 meters with a time of 4:44.05, and Thaddeus Bray captured the discus with a throw of 132-11 while also placing third in the shot put. Other Coyotes who excelled included: Aiden Appel, second with a PR in the 1600 and second with a PR in the 3200; Abel Collin, third in the discus; and Mason Kirchner, third in the pole vault. The 4x100 relay team also took third. 


Jackson County Central was seventh in the team standings. Grant Ambrose took second in the pole vault, James Atura third in the 110 hurdles and Kristoph Olsem third in the high jump. For Adrian-Ellsworth, which was 11th, Darwin Demarrias-Jansma was third in the 1600.


In the girls competition, Luverne was the top team with 142 points. Among area teams were JCC, fifth; HL-O/F, sixth; A-E seventh and Worthington ninth.


The Coyotes' Laiken Farris won the 3200 with a personal-best time of 12:05.54 and also took the 1600 in 5:31.60. Alabama Hoonhorst was second in the discus and Trinity Reynolds third in the 100 hurdles.


For Jackson County Central, the 4x200 relay team finished on top with a time of 1:49.90. Allison Luebben placed second in both the 200 meters and long jump, and Natalia Botello-Ramos was third in the 100.


Adrian-Ellsworth got a second-place finish from Lucy Thier in the triple jump, a third-place finish from Olivia Bullerman in the 400 and a third-place finish in the 4x800 replay. Worthington had Shayla Juarez take second in the 400 and Tiana Garcia finish third in the 200.

Visting Marshall edged the Trojans by one stroke, 174-175, in a boys golf meet Tuesday at GREATLife Worthington.


Hunter Heitkamp was the lowest scorer for the Trojans and second overall with a 42. Cameron Krommendyk and Gerrit Larson each carded 43s, and Blake Vosburgh and Easton Drost each had 47s.


In the girls competition, the Tigers came out on top 186-211. Ava Schutz was fourth overall and tops for the Trojans at 49. Greta Mahlberg shot a 51, Claire Meyer came in at 53 and Ellie Drost finished at 58.

In high school baseball Tuesday, Marshall's JR Vierstraete smacked a three-run homer and finished with six RBIs as Marshall beat WHS 12-2 in five innings.


Marshall got its 10 of its 12 runs in innings three through five, with Worthington's Talen Turner starting on the mound and taking the pitching loss. Turner had one of the Trojans' four hits, which were all singles. Wyatt Peterson had two hits and Brayden Raymo one.


Worthington is now 1-8 on the spring.

In high school softball, the winless Trojans played a doubleheader at Marshall on Tuesday and were defeated 6-1 and 16-0. WHS is 0-11.
