WCFC to kick off first season Saturday on the road

Updated: Apr 30, 2023

The Worthington Community Football Club is set to play its inaugural game in the United Premier Soccer League on Saturday.

The Toros will play against the Maplebrook 58ers in a match scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Maple Grove High School field. The club played its final friendly match of the preseason this past Saturday, posting a 3-1 victory over the Sioux City United Football Club at Trojan Field.

Javier Garcia Bastian scored the only goal of the opening half in the match against Sioux City. In the second half, it was Salvador Nava Garcia coming up with both goals for the Toros. Sioux City United scored late in the second half to avoid the shutout.

Saturday's match in Maple Grove marks the first of 10 scheduled for the club's first-ever season. The Toros play at the St. Croix Soccer Club on May 7 and the Superior Soccer Club on May 13 before competing in its home opener on May 18 against Austin Villa. Worthington then plays two more matches at home -- against the St. Paul Blackhawks on May 20 and the Minneapolis City Soccer Club on May 27 -- before returning to the road. The other home matches are scheduled for June 7 and June 18.

Meanwhile, the WCFC 2's team will begin play on May 14 as it opens its inaugural United Premier Soccer League Division I season. It will play at the Leon Football Club, then come home for a May 20 match against the Rochester Football Club at Trojan Field.
