Trojans win another boys soccer match by shutout

The Worthington Trojans boys soccer team picked up another shutout victory Tuesday as they went on the road and defeated New Ulm 3-0.

Worthington had previously won each of its three matches by shutout last week, topping Marshall at Trojan Field 4-0 before blanking Waseca 8-0 and Mankato East 5-0 away from home. As a result, WHS moved up two spots to seventh in this week’s state Class AA boys soccer poll.

On Tuesday, the Trojans improved to 13-2 overall this season thanks to a pair of goals from Carlos Castillo and a single goal from Jonathan Banegas. Coach Juan Flores noted that it was a tough first half for his team, and that the Trojans started passing the ball on the ground even though it was very windy and raining. WHS, though, played really well in the second half, Flores added, and he said the Trojans just have to keep their momentum going and finish out the regular season strong on Thursday.

That last regular season match will be played at Fairmont. If Worthington wins, it will secure its fourth consecutive Big South Conference title. The sectional playoffs begin next Tuesday.

In girls soccer Tuesday, Worthington was defeated at home by New Ulm 5-1. The Trojans, now 2-12, play their last match of the regular season at 7 p.m. Thursday at home against Fairmont.
