Regan Loft had four goals and Eliza Holmgren added a hat trick Thursday night as the third-seeded Marshall Tigers rolled to a 17-1 triumph over sixth-seeded Worthington in an opening-round game of the Section 3A girls hockey tournament.
Kendall Beernaert, Lily Verkinderen and Brooklyn Mauch each scored a pair of goals for the Tigers, who led 8-0 after the first period and 14-0 after two. The Trojans’ Riley Nickel, playing in her final high school hockey game, scored unassisted with 45 seconds remaining for Worthington’s goal. Short-handed WHS had Maddie Peterson, typically a forward, step in to play in net Thursday.
Worthington finished the 2022-2023 season with a 3-19-1 record.

In high school wrestling Thursday night, the Worthington Trojans competed in a triangular meet in Waseca. Worthington was edged by Waseca 39-33 in the Trojans’ first match of the night.
At 113 pounds, Alex Galvez won by fall in 49 seconds for Worthington. Dalton Larson added a win by fall at 120 in 2:37, and Oscar Galvez won by fall at 132 in 3:54. Kasey Gerhard won a 4-3 decision at 285 for the Trojans, who also won a pair of matches via forfeit.
Worthington was scheduled to take on Lake City in its second match of the night.
