Trojans earn second straight girls hoops victory

Ellie Weg scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and the Worthington Trojans girls basketball team overcame a slow start Thursday and rallied to take care of Albert Lea, 77-59.


The host Trojans trailed 32-28 at halftime and were down by six on two occasions in the early stages of the second half before finding their stride. New Gora contributed 15 points and Tarren Spartz added 13 points and nine rebounds for Worthington, which won its second straight and improved to 4-11 on the season. Also chipping in for the Trojans were Pham Gora, who had 12 points, and Madison Beckmann had eight points – all from the free throw line – as well as eight boards.


Kendall Kenis had a game-high 25 points for Albert Lea, which is 1-12.


WHS, which made 23 of 32 free throws in the game, will be back in action Friday night when it entertains St. Peter.

Senior Riley Nickel scored the Worthington Trojans’ lone goal on Senior Night as Worthington was defeated 6-1 by visiting Austin in high school girls hockey.


Nickel’s unassisted goal came in the second period and made the score 3-1. Peyton Squier and Sarah Wangen each scored twice for Austin.

It was also a 6-1 score in the Trojans’ boys hockey game Thursday, as the host Trojans were knocked off by Marshall. Andrew Seanor had a had trick for the Tigers. Easton Newman scored Worthington’s goal late in the third period on an assist from Dawson Duangapei.

The Worthington Trojans gymnastics team traveled to Redwood Falls Thursday night and came out on top in a meet against Redwood Valley 141.550-133.050.


Worthington’s Hali Bullerman won the all-around with a composite score of 36.45. Bullerman was victorious in the vault with a 9.375 as well as the bars with a 9.05; she also took second on the floor and third on the beam. The Trojans’ Addison Gerber took top honors on the floor at 9.275.


Other contributors for WHS Thursday were Olivia Barber, third in the all-around, third on the bars and second on the beam; Kelsey Soleta, second on the vault; and Cristy Banegas, second on the bars.
