Pair of Trojans heading to state track and field meet

Updated: Jun 3

Two members of the Worthington Trojans boys track and field team qualified for this coming weekend’s state meet during the Section 2AAA meet that concluded Friday in St. Peter.

Junior Fanuel Wolday qualified for the Trojans in a pair of events. Wolday placed third in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:24.95, which was good enough to qualify for state. He was also able to qualify in the 3200 meters, as his time of 9:37.05 seconds earned him a fourth-place finish in the event while also clinching a spot at state.

The other Worthington athlete to advance to state was freshman Caleb Meyer, who placed second at sectionals in the high jump with a leap of 6-5. Meyer’s second-place finish qualified him for state, as did the height of his jump.

Other members of the Trojans’ boys track and field team fell just short of state qualification. Sophomore Tethlouch Gach placed third in the 300-meter hurdles, missing out on state by a mere .14 seconds. Senior Mak Lia, competing in the triple jump, had a personal record, but wound up in fourth place and seven inches short of a state meet berth. Additionally, the WHS 4x400 meter relay team of Isaac Kinser, Isaiah Bates, Permeye Okony and Austin Kinser had a season-best time of 3:30.9 seconds. The state qualifying time was 3:29.07, meaning they missed by less than two seconds.

Among the Trojan girls, the closest individual to earning a spot in the state meet was junior Grace Bates, who finished fourth in the long jump at 16-2. That jump left her three inches short of qualifying for state.

Competition in the state Class 2AA track and field meet will be Friday and Saturday at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
