The Minnesota West women's basketball team upped its record to 8-1 on the season with a 77-74 Tuesday night victory over the Mount Marty junior varsity in Yankton, South Dakota.
The Lady Jays trailed by five points entering the fourth quarter but outscored the Lancers 27-19 in the last 10 minutes. Minnesota West got the win despite a subpar shooting night, as it shot just 36.1% from the field and 62.3% from the free-throw line. The Lady Jays did benefit from a lot of trips to the charity stripe, as they ended up with 33 makes in 53 attempts. Mount Marty, meanwhile, was 12-of-24 from the line.
Tia Murray led the way for Minnesota West by scoring 26 points while adding eight rebounds and four blocks. Olvia Hayenga contributed 17 points, eight rebounds, six steals and four assists. Dannyn Peterson had 11 points, while Madisyn Huisman chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds. Brooklyn Scheitel-Taylor had team highs of nine rebounds and eight assists.
The Bluejay women and men will both be home for games on Friday and Saturday. Minnesota West will have a basketball doubleheader against the Dordt JV beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday and a twinbill against Minnesota North College-Rainy River starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
