Six different players scored goals Wednesday and defending champion Hermantown blanked Luverne 6-0 in the opening game of the Minnesota Class A Boys Hockey Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center.
Hermantown scored three goals in the first period and three in the third to post the win. The Hawks, 26-2-1 on the season, outshot the Cardinals 49-13 in the contest. Hermantown will next face Mahtomedi at 11 a.m. Friday.
Luverne is now 21-7-1 on the year. The Cardinals were scheduled to play at 10 a.m. today vs. Alexandria Area.

In the Section 3A boys basketball tournament quarterfinals Wednesday, top-seeded and defending state champion Russell-Tyler-Ruthton improved to 25-1 by edging fourth-seeded Murray County Central 54-51 in the first game of a doubleheader in the Worthington High School gymnasium. In the second game, No. 2 Southwest Minnesota Christian defeated No. 3 Westbrook-Walnut Grove 66-62.
