Lady Jays set new points record, but fall in regional finals

Tournament host Anoka-Ramsey kept the Minnesota West Lady Jays from earning an automatic national tournament berth on Sunday as the Rams edged the Lady Jays 59-58 for the Region 13B title.

In a close game throughout, the Lady Jays trailed 49-43 early in the fourth quarter but got baskets from Dannyn Peterson, Olivia Hayenga and Tia Murray to tie the score. Minnesota West soon grabbed a 56-54 edge on a Hattie DeVries layup, but Anoka-Ramsey hit a 3-pointer and was able to hold off the Lady Jays the rest of the way.

Minnesota West, now 26-4 on the season, will wait to see if it’s an at-large selection for the national tournament. It was ranked third in the most recent NJCAA poll.

On Saturday in the regional tourney, the Lady Jays steamrolled Rainy River with a 41-4 outburst in the first quarter and broke their record of points in a game that they set just a week and half ago in a dominating 124-48 victory. Audrey Drapeau led seven Minnesota West players who had double-digit point totals with 23. Each of the Lady Jays’ four non-starters had 13 points or more.
