Lady Jays fall one victory short of national tournament

The Minnesota West volleyball team came up one win short this weekend in its bid for a trip to the national tournament. After a victory Friday, the Lady Jays were stopped Saturday by Century College in the Region 13A championship match 3-0. Game scores were 25-18, 25-23, 25-21.


Hatiie DeVries led the in kills with nine against Century while Kiarra Danielson had seven kills, 11 digs and an ace serve. Kat Polzine added five kills and four ace serves on 14-for-14 serving, Shawna Rogers had 10 digs and served 12-for-12. Ella Hesse chipped in with four kills and Lexi Schreuers had 25 set assists and two ace serves on 11-for-11 serving. Hesse and Schreurs were both named to the all-region team.


In Friday night’s match, Minnesota West blanked Central Lakes 3-0 with game scores of 25-12, 25-22, 27-25. Hesse had 15 kills and Danielson contributed nine kills, 11 digs and two ace serves. Schreurs passed for 32 set assists and added a pair of aces on 16-for-16 serving and two blocks. Rogers had 11 digs and went 15-for-15 serving with an ace.


Minnesota West concludes an outstanding 2023 season with a record of 24-9.

In Section 3A playoff football Saturday, top-seeded Sleep Eye United used multiple big plays on offense to top fourth-seeded Adrian-Ellsworth 40-16.

Quarterback Caden Evers tossed four touchdown passes on the afternoon. Two went to Jon Petermann on plays covering 64 and 59 yards, a third went on a 62-yard hookup with Talan Helget and another came on a 24-yard throw to Helget. Petermann contributed a third TD on a 35-yard run, and Austin Uecker added an 82-yard kickoff return for another score.


The Dragons, who got outscored 26-8 in the second half, got a 20-yard TD from Rilee Heidebrink and a one-yard plunge from Aiden Tweet for their TDs. Adrian-Ellsworth finishes the 2023 season with a 7-3 record.

Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Beb Byers placed 13th overall Friday with a clocking of 16:31.4 to l0ead the Generals at the Iowa Class 1A boys state meet. On Saturday, it was George-Little Rock/Central Lyon’s Mary Schriever turning in the team’s best time, as she finished 15th in the Iowa Class 2A girls state meet in 19:39.3.
