Hay bales catch fire in Tuesday afternoon incident

The Worthington Fire Department was dispatched Tuesday afternoon to a hay bale fire in an unusual spot -- near the corner of Oxford Street and Omaha Avenue in city limits.

Fire Chief Pat Shorter said Wednesday that firefighters were dispatched at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday after a road bale trailer broke in half, causing sparks from the street and then hay bales catching on fire. The incident took place near Pawn-It on Oxford Street, and some bales went into the street.

Corey Polz. who had recently signed up to join the Worthington Fire Department, said he was working across the street at the Billion Chevy dealership and saw the trailer bust in half. He and Jon Harvey ran over with extinguishers and tamed the fire down until other firefighters arrived.

Shorter said 18 firefighters and three trucks responded to the fire, which was put out with a combination of foam and water. Crews were on the scene until about 4 p.m.

The Worthington Police Department and Minnesota Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
