Four area teams qualify for state amateur baseball tourney

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

The Luverne Redbirds, Fairmont Martins, Hadley Buttermakers and Jackson Bulls will represent Region 13C in the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Tournament later this month.

Luverne, the No. 1 seed in the Region 13C playoffs, blanked eighth-seeded Heron Lake 3-0 on Saturday to win the teams' best-of-three playoff series two games to none.

Fourth-seeded Hadley, meanwhile, rallied past fifth-seeded to win that series two games to one after dropping the opener. The Buttermakers shut out the Pirates 5-0 on Saturday to get even in the series and then captured a 10-6 victory on Sunday.

The other two series in the Region 13C Playoffs were both two-game sweeps. Fairmont, which had blanked Lakefield 10-0 in seven innings last Wednesday, won again by 10-0 on Friday as the No. 2-seeded Martins moved on.

Sixth-seeded Jackson finished off a two-game sweep of No. 3-seeded Milroy on Friday by edging the Irish 2-1, two days after winning by a dominating 17-0.

While Luverne, Fairmont, Hadley and Jackson all advance to state, the four teams will now play best-of-three series to determine seeding. Luverne will play at Hadley to begin their series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, while Fairmont and Jackson will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Fairmont.

Each of the four state-qualifying teams was also able to draft another pitcher for the postseason, and three Windom Pirates were selected as Collin Lovell was picked by Luverne, Ross Ackerman by Fairmont and Luke Gilbertson by Hadley, Brandan Alfson of Pipestone was selected by Jackson.
