The Worthington Cubs amateur baseball team was on the road Sunday afternoon in Hadley and wound up getting thumped by the Buttermakers, 23-3.
The Cubs dropped to 1-8 in league play this season, with their lone win coming against Heron Lake. Against Hadley on Sunday, Blake Ahrenstroff paced the offense with a solo homer and double. The Buttermakers scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and kept the busy bats going forward to win the team’s seven-inning game.
Worthington’s game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Fairmont. The Cubs compete in the Gopher League, which is currently led by the Luverne Redbirds, who have a 7-1 record in league action. Hadley is 5-2, the Milroy Irish are 5-3, and the Pipestone A’s are 3-5, followed by Worthington.
In the First Nite League, meanwhile, the Jackson Bulls are 5-1 on the season thus far, with Fairmont and Windom right on their heels. The Martins have a league record of 7-2 and Windom is 5-2. Completing the remainder of the standings are the Lakefield Frogs at 3-7, the Fox Lake Foxes at 2-6 and the Heron Lake Lakers at 1-7.
Jackson and Luverne are scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a key game at Luverne. The Bulls play another important contest standings-wise on Sunday when they host Windom at 2 p.m.
