The Bill and Rhonda Brandt family of rural Lakefield has been chosen as the Jackson County Farm Family of the Year for 2021.
Each year, local University of Minnesota Extension committees choose their Farm Family of the Year honorees based on their demonstrated commitment to their communities and to enhancing and supporting agriculture.
The Brandts started Brandt Gardens and Greenhouse in 2000 as a way to teach their boys responsibility and work ethic, and the business became Brandt Gardens and Greenhouse LLC 13 years later as the Brandts opted to diversify their operation to keep the farm going.
The Brandt family grows a large selection of produce on six acres that is sold at local farmers markets and through a Community Support Agriculture Program.
The 2020 Jackson County Farm Family of the Year, the Jerry and Nancy Ackerman family, also received their award this year since they were not able to be recognized in person last year.
