Bluejays win in women's hoops; men edged

The Minnesota West Lady Jays led 28-10 after the first quarter and went on to post an 81-61 victory Tuesday night over Iowa Lakes Community College in the Center for Health & Wellness.


Minnesota West, ranked fourth nationally, improved to 6-1 on the season. Olivia Hayenga led the way with 24 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals, while Tia Murray chipped in with 18 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. Dannyn Peterson added 11 points for the Lady Jays, and Brooklyn Scheitel-Taylor wreaked havoc on defense by picking up nine steals.


Meanwhile, the Minnesota West men's basketball team was on the road in Madison, South Dakota and dropped a 59-56 decision to the Dakota State junior varsity. Elijah Williams had 18 points to top the Bluejays (2-4), and Dominic Drent contributed 10 points. Bie Ruei had 10 rebounds, and Brock Bruns had eight boards along with eight points.


Both the Minnesota West men's and women's basketball squads will be home Saturday to face Ellsworth Community College. The women's matchup will tip off at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the men's game. You can hear both games on 104.3 The Bridge.
