Trojan girls hockey team gets initial victory of the season, posts shutout

Worthington's girls hockey team earned their first W of the season on Friday by defeating Prairie Center 7-0 in Windom. The Trojans scored one goal in the first and two in the second before breaking things open with four in the third.


Leah Nelson got WHS on the board in the first period, and Chloe Jones and Breeta Johnson followed with goals within 36 seconds of each other in the second. Scoring in the third period for Worthington were  — in order — Audrey Johnson, Madilyn Polz, Kylee Milbrath and Breeta Johnson. Also chipping in with assists for the Trojans were: Madelyn Cummings and Monroe Sieve (who had two each); Victoria Bush, Polz, Addison Joens and Chloe Joens. 


Head coach Chad Nickel reported that it was a big night for the girls, as they controlled the game and had lots of tape-to-tape passing, WHS goalkeeper Macie Mahlberg also stopped all 12 shots she faced.


WHS had its game scheduled for Saturday in Windom canceled due to the snowstorm.

The Minnesota West basketball games that had been scheduled for this weekend were also canceled because of the weather. The Bluejay men had been scheduled to play twice at the Broadway Classic in Burlington, Iowa, but that event was canceled. The Lady Jays also saw their Saturday home matchup against the Gustavus Adolphus junior varsity canceled.

The Windom Eagles exploded to a 22-0 start in their Saturday girls basketball game against the Worthington Trojans and went on to earn an 84-44 victory at a game played at Minnesota West's Center for Health & Wellness.


WHS called for a full timeout with 12:23 remaining in the first half and the score 22-0. Claire Schultz soon got the first Trojan points, but Windom went to lead by as many as 37 points before taking a 35-point advantage into halftime. The Eagles' Haidyn Sammons led the charge for her squad by scoring 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting in the first half, during which the Trojans were hurt by 17 turnovers.


Sammons finished the game with 20 points to lead Windom, which is 2-0. Trojan eighth-grader Savannah Dale again led her team with 18 points, while another eighth-grader — Schultz — was next with nine. Worthington is 1-1.

In the first of two games Saturday at Minnesota West, it was Pipestone Area defeating Adrian-Ellsworth 53-44.


The Arrows, now 2-0, led 27-19 at the half and were up 35-26 in the second half went they went on a 12-0 surge. Pipestone Area was ahead by as many as 23 before the 0-2 Dragons trimmed the deficit down in the final minutes.

Taryn Tuinstra had 20 points for the Arrows and Jadyn Kor added 18. Shandra Kuperus topped the Dragons with 18 points and Kamry Lehhnoff had 12.
