Area Sports Roundup: Sept. 8, 2022

The Worthington Trojans boys soccer team remained perfect on the season Thursday night as they won at New Ulm, 2-0.


Jonathan Banegas and Danny Banegas each scored for WHS, which improved to 6-0 thus far. Meanwhile, the Trojans’ defense was again solid as the team recorded its fifth consecutive shutout triumph.


The Trojans, who are ranked eighth in this week’s state Class AA poll, will next play Saturday at No. 10 Austin.

In girls soccer, WHS played at home at Trojan Field and dropped a 9-0 decision to New Ulm.

Worthington is now 0-5-1 for the season. The Trojans’ next match will be on Tuesday in Fairmont.

The host Windom Eagles defeated Worthington 3-2 Thursday night in high school volleyball, rallying from an 0-2 deficit. Game scores were 28-30, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17, 15-10.


Windom improved to 5-0 on the season, while the Trojans are now 2-3. Statistical leaders for Worthington were Tarren Spartz, who had 19 kills and 20 digs; Ellie Weg, with 15 kills and five blocks; Regan Schaeger, who had 15 digs; Addison Gerber, who passed for 30 set assists; Maddie Pederson, who was 20-for-22 serving with two aces; and Janessa Hamann, with eight kills.


The Trojans next play Tuesday at home against Redwood Valley.

In girls tennis, visiting Redwood Valley topped the Trojans 4-3.


Two of Worthington’s three wins Thursday came in singles. Brooke Nordseth, competing at No. 2 singles, won 6-1 6-0 against Lilly DeBlieck. At No. 3 singles, the Trojans’ Taya Oberloh outlasted Lauren Dolezal by scores of 5-7, 6-4, 10-8.


The other win for WHS was at No. 1 doubles, where the tandem of Riley Nickel and Hannah McNab beat Mila Jenniges and Ella Stoneberg 6-3 6-1.
