Area Sports Roundup: Sept. 30, 2021

The Worthington Trojans boys soccer team, currently ranked fourth in the Minnesota Class AA poll, improved to 13-0 on the season Thursday by winning on the road at Waseca, 5-0. The match began ahead of the scheduled starting time because of the threat of rain.

Jonathan Banegas scored a pair of goals for WHS, while Ulises Barrera, Dalen Gonzalez and Jose Chavez also had goals. Gonzalez’s goal came on a penalty kick.

The Trojans will be back in action on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. match against Faribault.

In girls soccer Thursday night, the Worthington Trojans lost at home, 1-0, in a match that was called after one half due to persistent lightning. Waseca had the one-goal lead at the break, at which time coaches and officials consulted and Waseca ultimately declared the winner. The Trojans, now 2-12 overall on the season, will next play Tuesday at home against New Ulm.

The scheduled girls tennis match of Worthington at Blue Earth was canceled and will not be made up, as postseason play begins next week.
