Area Sports Roundup: Sept. 24, 2022

The Worthington Trojans improved to 12-0 on the boys soccer season on Saturday, routing Albert Lea on the road 11-0.


Jonathan Banegas, who scored six goals in Thursday’s win over St. Peter, scored four more times against the Tigers. Bayron Echeverria had a pair of goals for Worthington, which also received single goals from Jose Chavez, Julio Martin, Alex Galvez, Santos Orellana and Alan Flores.


The Trojans have four matches remaining in what they hope will be their second consecutive unbeaten regular season.

The Worthington Trojans volleyball team finished in first place in a multi-team tournament Saturday in St. james.


The Trojans advanced in pool play into the gold bracket, during which they beat St. James by game scores of 25-13 25-18 and New Ulm Cathedral by game scores of 25-17, 25-20. Addison Gerber recorded her 1,000th career set assist during Saturday’s tournament; a recognition of this accomplishment will take place Tuesday night when WHS play host to Luverne.

The WHS football team was on the road Friday night and was defeated at Marshall, 44-0.


For the Tigers, Chidi Nwakama scored on touchdown runs of two and nine yards, and Mason Eickhoff also had a pair of one-yard runs that each went for TDs. Marshall led 35-0 at halftime, which was a prolonged intermission because of lightning in the area.


The Trojans ended up with no first downs in the game. They are now 0-4 on the season.

The Minnesota West Bluejays got on the scoreboard first Saturday, but it was all Yellow Jackets after that as Rochester topped the visiting Bluejays 29-7 in college football.


With just 49 seconds gone by in the game, Minnesota West’s Larrey Williams III picked off a Rochester pass at his own 47 and ran it back for a touchdown. The Bluejay offense, though, wound up being shut down throughout the afternoon and managed just 152 total yards.


The Yellow jackets entered halftime with a 16-7 edge and scored less than a minute into the third quarter on a blocked punt. The final Rochester TD came later in that quarter with just one second remaining.


Minnesota West managed just 15 rushing yards on 21 carries. In the air, quarterback Brock Starley completed 9-of-43 passes for 127 yards. Rashard Anderson was the leading receiver with two catches for 32 yards.


Among the leaders on defense for the Bluejays were Ke’untay Felton, who had eight solo tackles and four assisted tackles; Tate Gaul, three solo tackles and six assisted tackles; and JayVarion Peters-Johnson, two solo tackles and seven assisted tackles. Minnesota West is now 1-4; the Bluejays will host Vermillion next Saturday.

The Minnesota West volleyball team dropped to 5-10 on the season with a 3-0 loss at Century College on Friday night. Game scores were 25-16, 25-12, 25-19.


The Lady Jays are scheduled to have their next match on Friday evening, when they’ll play host to Anoka-Ramsey.
