Area Sports Roundup: Sept. 15, 2022

The Worthington Trojans boys soccer team, playing in just their second home match of the season, blanked the Mankato Loyola Crusaders 3-0 on Thursday night to improve to 9-0 on the season.

WHS marked Parents Night prior to the start of the match and took a 2-0 advantage in the first 40 minutes following an early goal from Christian Martinez on a rebound in front of the Crusader net and a goal struck by Alan Flores past a diving Mankato Loyola goalkeeper. In the second half, Jonathan Banegas drilled a shot to the left of the Crusader goalie into the corner of the net to make it 3-0.

The Trojans controlled play for a majority of the game but were victimized by multiple offsides calls – particularly in the first half. Defensively, WHS picked up its sixth shutout of the season.

Ellie Weg had nine kills, eight digs, went 16-for-16 serving with five aces and was credited with 11 blocks as the Worthington Trojans won a girls volleyball match against visiting Fairmont 3-0. Game scores were 25-12, 25-13, 25-18.

Tarren Spartz contributed 10 kills and nine digs for WHS, which won its second straight match this week after edging Redwood Valley 3-2 on Tuesday. Jayden Spartz added five kills, Madison Beckmann had four blocks and Addison Gerber passed for 25 set assists. With the victory, the Trojans are now 4-3 on the season.

In girls tennis, host St. James took care of Worthington 7-0 in a Thursday match.

The closest match of the day for Trojans came at No. 2 singles, where St. James’ Allison Bluedorn topped the Trojans’ Hannah McNab in three sets by scores of 4-6, 6-0, 10-2. All of the other matches were decided in straight sets.

Trailing 2-0 in the first half, Worthington’s Leidy Chavez received a throw-in and maneuvered around the end line of Mankato Loyola. She then sent a crossing pass to Banegas, who was in perfect position to finish the play and score for the Trojans.
