Area Sports Roundup: February 3, 2022

The Worthington High School boys basketball team had five players score in double figures Thursday night as the Trojans rolled to a 77-50 triumph over Luverne in the WHS gym.


Abagotte Opiew led the way for the Trojans with 16 points. Kaleb Knothe added 13, Jacari Swinea 12, Marenono Opiew 11 and Jake Brandner 10. WHS scored the first 11 points of the game, and after Luverne fought back to tie the score at 15-15, the Trojans eventually used a late first-half surge to open up a 41-28 advantage at the break.


With the win, WHS improved to 4-12 overall this season. Luverne, now 3-11, got 18 points from Eli Radtke and 13 points from Connor Overgaard.

In girls basketball Thursday night, visiting Worthington trailed 33-16 at halftime and eventually fell to Luverne, 64-51.


Olivia Hayenga had 14 points and Ellie Weg added 13 points for the Trojans, who are now 11-7 this season. For Luverne, now 14-4 , Kira John had 22 points, and Elizabeth Wagner and Christina Wagner added 14 each.

Blake Luinenburg scored two first-period goals and Andrew Benson added two more goals later in the game as the Worthington Trojans boys hockey team got back in the win column Thursday night, topping visiting Redwood Valley 4-2.


Luinenburg scored a power-play goal on assists from Benson and Blake Ahrenstorff and later scored unassisted, and Benson’s first goal made it 3-0 early in the second period. After the Cardinals closed to within 3-2, Benson scored at 9:52 of the third, with goalie Matthew Becker getting credited with an assist.


Becker only needed to make eight saves in the game for the Trojans, who are now 9-9. WHS fired 58 shots on net.

In high school wrestling Thursday, host Minneota topped Worthington 51-22. Twelve of the Trojans’ 22 points came on wins via forfeit. Dalton Larson won by major decision at 113 pounds for WHS. Ethan Meyer and Tanner Hennings won by decision at 120 and 220, respectively.
