The Minnesota West Lady Jays topped Mesabi Range 90-67 on Saturday night in the North Plains B District Tournament in Coon Rapids and will play tonight for a district title and national tournament berth.


Five players scored in double figures for the Lady Jays. Tia Murray led the way with 16 points followed by Madisyn Huisman with 14, Dannyn Peterson with 13, MacKensie Post with 11 and Hunter Garcia with 10. Murray added a game-high 10 rebounds as Minnesota West outrebounded Mesabi 46-34. Post chipped with four assists for the Jays.


Tonight’s game is at 5 p.m. against Anoka-Ramsey.

Three Adrian-Ellsworth wrestlers qualified for this coming weekend’s state tournament during competition Saturday in the Section 3A Individual Wrestling Tournament in Wabasso.


Cameron Wieneke finished in first place at 220 pounds, while Isaac Bullerman at 152 and Jaren Winselman at 195 each earned second place. Jackson County Central wrestlers dominated Saturday’s event, as 13 individuals captured first or second.


In Section 3AA wrestling in Redwood Valley, it was Cole Hennings of Worthington qualifying for state by taking first place at 285 pounds. Complete results from both tournaments can be found at myradioworks.net.

In girls basketball Friday night, Tarren Spartz scored 20 points, Olivia Hayenga added 18 and Ellie Weg contributed 16 as Worthington topped New Ulm, 83-67.


The Trojans received the No. 5 seed in the Section 2AAA tournament and will play on the road at 7 p.m. Tuesday at fourth-seeded St. Peter. With Friday’s victory, the Trojans improved to 15-10 on the season.

In boys basketball Friday, St. Peter took care of visiting Worthington, 79-61. The Trojans, now 7-16 overall, will play at New Ulm Monday night.

In the Section 3A boys hockey tournament Saturday, Luverne and Windom Area were both eliminated in semifinal action. The third-seeded Cardinals were ousted by No. 2 Mankato East, 7-1, while No. 1 New Ulm edged the Eagles 4-3.
