The visiting Luverne Cardinals built a 5-0 lead and held off a Worthington comeback Tuesday afternoon to edge the Trojans 6-4 in high school softball.
Luverne scored a pair of runs on a well-placed bunt by Belle Smidt to take a 2-0 edge in top of the second. In the fifth, the Cardinals scored three times, as Toni Serie drove in a run with a single and Gracie Nath added an RBI base hit of her own.
WHS quickly answered in the bottom of the fifth. For the third time in the game, Bailey Ponto led off with a hit, and she’d come around to score the Trojans’ first run on a Hannah McNab RBI single. Maddie Petersen then drove in a run with a grounder, Madi Polz hit a sacrifice fly and Emma Hietbrink slapped an RBI single, and suddenly it was a one-run game.
Regan Mehlhof, who went 3-for-3 for Luverne, led off the sixth with a single and later scored on an Ella Reisdorfer hit for the sixth Cardinal run. Nath threw all seven innings in the circie for LHS, allowing seven hits, walking one and striking out eight. Ponto went the distance pitching for Worthington, surrendering 11 hits and two walks; she didn’t record a strikeout.
Luverne is now 15-4 on the season, while WHS is 3-15.
