Wrestling posteason gets underway Thursday in region

High school sectional boys wrestling tournaments are scheduled to begin Thursday across southwest Minnesota.


In Section 3A, ninth-seeded Red Rock Central will face No. 8 Redwood Valley at 6 p.m. in Jackson, with the winner to meet top-seeded JCC that same evening. Also Thursday, No. 10 Springfield and No. 7 Wabasso meet at 6 p.m. in Tracy, with the victor to take on second-seeded Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove afterward.


In additional Thursday matches, No. 5 Pipestone will be at No. 4 Fulda-Murray County Central in Slayton, and No. 6 St. James will wrestle against No. 3 Adrian-Ellsworth in Adrian. Both of those matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.


Winners of the Thursday quarterfinal round matches will meet in the semifinals Saturday afternoon, with the finals to follow, at Veteran’s Colisseum in Tracy.


In Section 3AA, Worthington will meet Windom-Mountain Lake at 6 p.m. Thursday in New Ulm, with the winner to face top-seeded New Ulm afterward.


Among Thursday’s other matches are No. 3 North New London-Spicer at No. 2 North Marshall at 7 p.m. and No. 3 South Luverne at No. 2 South Martin County West at 7 p.m. in Sherburn.


Winners of the Thursday quarterfinal round matches will meet in the semifinals Saturday, with the finals to follow, in New London.

The Minnesota West Lady Jays remained at No. 3 in this week’s NJCAA Division III Women’s Basketball poll.


Minnesota West, which won both of its games last week, has 78 points in the poll while sporting a 19-7 overall record. Rochester once again is at the top of the poll; it received all six first-place votes and 90 points on a record of 18-2. Northland, which is 18-4, is once again ranked second in the nation and got 84 points in the poll.


Another rival of the Lady Jays, Anoka-Ramsey, is ranked fourth in the poll for a second consecutive week. Minnesota West will have a big opportunity to jump in the rankings when it hosts Rochester in a game set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday night.
