Minnesota West softball goes 2-2 this week; Bluejay baseball 0-2

The Minnesota West softball team swept a home doubleheader against Ridgewater this week and also were swept at Rochester.


In game one against the Warriors on Monday, a six-run fourth for the Lady Jays snapped a 4-4 tie and sparked a 13-6 victory. Cassie Boyum tripled, doubled and drove in two runs and Maddie Kamm, Payton Riemers and Gracie Nath had a pair of hits each. Riemers drove in three runs and Nath had two RBIs.


Minnesota West also took game two, 9-1. Kamm contributed two doubles, scored two runs and drove in two. Riemers had a pair of singles along with two RBIs.

Kya Alderson pitched the complete five-inning game, allowing three hits while walking one and striking out seven.


The Lady Jays, now 3-9, lost Tuesday’s doubleheader at Rochester by scores of 18-13 and 9-1.


Minnesota West was resilient in game one, as it scored 10 runs in the top of the third inning after allowing 10 in the bottom of the second. Leading the Lady Jays offensively were Riemers, three singles and a triple; and Hannah McNab and Raya Van Beek, who each doubled twice and singled while driving in three runs. McNab also scored three times.


In game two, Riemers and Boyum had two singles each to top the Minnesota West hitting. The Lady Jays host St. Cloud Tech for two games on Friday.

In a Monday college baseball doubleheader, Minnesota West lost at Riverland by scores of 9-6 and 9-8.


The Bluejays mounted a three-run rally in the opener but came up short. Max Biehl and Takuto Usami both singled and doubled for Minnesota West, and Ales Zhao drove in two runs.


The Bluejays scored three times in the top of the seventh in game two to grab an 8-7 edge, but Riverland quickly answered with two runs to win it. Eliecer Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a homer, four RBIs and two runs scored. Zhao and Bryker Smith collected two hits each; Zhao scored three runs.


Minnesota West dropped to 13-16 overall with the two conference losses. Its next MCAC matchup will be a twinbill at Rochester on Saturday.
