WHS girls golfers win three-team meet with Pipestone Area, JCC

The Worthington Trojans' girls golf team captured a three-team meet Thursday afternoon at Jackson County Central, finishing with a cumulative team score of 219 strokes — just ahead of JCC's 220. Pipestone Area, which did not have a complete squad, wound up at plus-36.
Claire Meyer was the day's lowest scorer for WHS with a round of 49. That was good enough for second place among individuals behind medalist Vivian Brockberg of Pipestone Area, who shot a 47.
The Trojans' Claire Mahlberg was third among individuals, carding a 52. Callie Rosenberg was seventh at 58, and Ava Schutz was ninth at 60. Also competing for the Worthington varsity were Peyton Nickel with a 61 and Ellie Drost with a 63.
Rachel Mohr had the lowest score for the host Huskies at 52.
In boys competition Thursday, Jackson County Central finished on top with a team total of 177. Pipestone Area was at 179, and Worthington ended the day at 187.
Spenser Nickel had the lowest round of the day for the Trojans at 43. That was good enough for third individually; Matt Debates of the Arrows was the medalist with a 39, and JCC's Kyler Thier carded a 41.
Tyson Petersen shot a 46 for WHS, which was seventh overall, and Ryan Dorcey had a 47, which put him in eighth. Garret Larson fired a 51. Also playing for the Trojan varsity were Ben Mahlberg (52) and Cameron Krommendyk (53).

The visiting New Ulm Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 first inning lead Thursday and on to top Worthington 11-1 in five innings in high school softball action.
The Eagles collected 13 hits in the game while limiting the Trojans to just two. Breeta Johnson got an infield single in the third for one hit. The other one came in the fourth, when Hannah McNab connected for an RBI double to score Victoria Bush.
Bailey Ponto pitched the first 3 2/3 innings for WHS, and Morgan Menke finished. The Trojans have now lost four straight games and are 5-8 on the season.

The Minnesota West Lady Jay softball team lost a tough one and won a runaway Thursday at the Region 13A Tournament at Cental Lakes College in Brainerd.
In their first game of the day against Minnesota North College-Itasca, Minnesota West suffered a 7-6 setback in eight innings. Later in the day, Minnesota West kept itself alive in the double-elimination tourney by pounding Northland 21-0.
The Lady Jays will once again face Itasca at 11 a.m. Friday.

The WHS and New Ulm baseball teams picked up Thursday where they left off in an April game suspended by rain, and the Eagles were victorious 9-5. The game, which began April 17 in Worthington, had been tied 5-5 after six innings, but New Ulm scored four times in the top of the seventh Thursday to win it.
In the regularly scheduled matchup that followed, New Ulm earned a 14-3 triumph. The Trojans, now 2-9, will host Waseca at 1 p.m. Saturday. Catch all the action on 104.3 La Voz.
