The high-scoring Worthington Trojans boys basketball team, which had been averaging 80 points per game in five contests thus far this season, struggled Thursday night as the Trojans were defeated by the host Fergus Falls Otters 65-36.
WHS, now 4-2 on the season, was particularly stymied in the second half, as it scored just 15 points over the final 18 minutes. The Trojans did play Fergus Falls close for most of the first half and led by two at 20-18, but a Henry Bethel 3-pointer started an 8-0 Otters run that made it a 26-20 game. After a WHS free throw, Fergus Falls tallied the final seven points of the half and was up 33-21 at the break following a putback at the buzzer.
The Otters, who improved to 4-2, then went on an 8-0 surge to start the second half before a Kaleb Knothe 3 for the Trojans. Fergus Falls, though, was never threatened and later went on a 13-0 scoring burst to put the game well out of reach.
Bethel had 26 points for Fergus Falls to top all players. Jacari Swinea was the lone Trojan in double figures scoring with 11 points. Worthington will play once again in Fergus Falls at 3 p.m. Friday.
