Sibley-Ocheyedan planning for law change about eighth-grade athletes

The Sibley-Ocheyedan School District has sent out a letter addressed to district families and students regarding a new Iowa measure that allows eighth-grade students to participate in high school athletics beginning this August.

States the letter — also shared on Facebook last week -- in part: "We understand this change may generate questions from parents, students and coaches as everyone works to understand how the new law will be implemented. At this time, Sibley-Ocheyedan is in the process of reviewing the legislation and developing procedures that will align with both the law and the best interests of our Sibley-Ocheyedan student-athletes, athletic programs and the War Eagle Conference."

Adds the letter: "The Sibley-Ocheyedan Community School District passed an updated policy that was based on advice and guidance from the Iowa Association of School Boards. The policy can be viewed on our district website (policy 504.06). At the present time, we will not be implementing a blanket policy that places all eighth-grade students up to the high school level. We also recognize that there may be situations where consideration could be appropriate. Much of this will be handled on a case-by-case basis as we work with families, coaches and administration. We are planning on having a process and procedure in place that aligns with this policy by this fall."
