Toros win Wednesday match, remain in playoff chase

Updated: Jun 9

The Worthington Community Football Club Toros snapped a three-match losing streak Wednesday night, edging Austin Villa 2-1 in their regular-season home finale.

The Toros, who are now 5-4 on the year, will need a victory in their season-ending match against 1826 Academy on Saturday, June 15. That’s scheduled for 2 p.m. at North St. Paul High School.

On Wednesday night, WCFC scored early as a Tim Kaltenberg goal that was assisted by Jonathan Banegas gave the Toros a 1-0 edge in the opening five minutes.

Juani Mackrey’s goal on an assist from Chris Cerda made the score 2-0, but Austin Villa scored on a penalty kick to slice that advantage in half. Neither team added to their totals in the second half.

Also Wednesday, the Worthington Cubs dropped to 1-7 on the season following a 14-1 road loss to Windom.

The Cubs got on the board first when Kent Lais’ RBI double in the top of the first inning scored Easton Sauerbrei. The Pirates, though, took things from there.

Worthington will next host a game against the Milroy Irish on Sunday afternoon.
