Smoke testing of sanitary sewer lines starts Monday in Worthington

The Worthington Public Utilities Wastewater Department will begin smoke testing of sanitary sewer lines in the city on Monday. Testing will continue for approximately three to four weeks.

Testing will occur in all areas located east of a line from U.S. 59, North Humiston Avenue, Humiston Avenue, north of Okabena Street and east of First Avenue.

Some smoke may enter residences or businesses through dry plumbing traps and may be avoided by running water in the traps of floor and shower drains beforehand. The smoke is visible, has an odor and is generally harmless. However, it may in some cases cause respiratory irritation.

Ventilating the area by opening windows will cause the smoke to dissipate rapidly. Please call (507) 372-8680 if you observe smoke in your home or business or have any questions regarding this program.

This testing is being performed as part of an ongoing program to improve sanitary sewer service.
