Slayton plays host to Red Rock Conference track and field meet

Hills-Beaver Creek was the winner in both the boys and girls competition in the Red Rock Conference track and field meet Thursday in Slayton.
In the boys' competition, the Patriots compiled 182 points, with Murray County Central coming in second at 140. Among the other teams in the meet were Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda, which was fourth with 70 points, and Adrian-Ellsworth, which was eighth with 32.
For the Coyotes, Matthew Stapek was a winner in the 1600 meters and Evan Baumgardner a first-place finisher in the 3200 meters. The Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda 4x800 relay team also was victorious. Other top placers included Thaddeus Brey, second in the discus; Mason Kirchner, third in the pole vault, and Aiden Appel, third with a personal record in the 3200.
For the Dragons, Carter Murphy took second in both the 100 and 200, and Darwin Demarrias-Jansma was third in both the 1600 and 3200.
In the girls' competition, Hills-Beaver Creek had 158 points compared to second-place Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton's 117.5. Heron-Lake-Okabena/Fulda was third with 91.5 points. Adrian-Ellsworth was seventh with 66.
For the Coyotes, Laiken Farris won both the 800 and 1600 meters, Mara Clarke took the 3200 and Alabama Hoonhorst was triumphant in the discus. Other top placers were: Rebecca Cheadle, second in the high jump; Grace Sawadago, third in the 200 and fourth in the 100; Brynlee Farris, fifth in both the 300 hurdles and triple jump; and Brooklyn Tyrrel, fifth in the pole vault. Hoonhorst was also fourth in the shot put.
For the Dragons, the 4x800 relay team took first place, while Lucy Thier was second in the triple jump and fifth in the 400. Olivia Bullerman was fourth in the 400, Reese Henning fourth in the discus and Katelyn Frodermann fourth in the high jump.

Anja Nielson pitched a four-hit shutout for visiting Windom while striking out 16 Worthington hitters to help lead the Eagles over the Trojans, 6-0, on Thursday in high school softball.
Nielson fanned the first six hitters she faced and then capped her performance by striking out the side again in the bottom of the seventh. Windom improved to 10-9 with the triumph, while Worthington slipped to 5-13.
The Eagles scored a run on a double play in the first and then added three more in the second on a two-run double from Gracie Buckentin and an RBI single from Charlie Huska. Buckentin had a sacrifice fly in the third for another run.
Bailey Ponto pitched for the Trojans and led the Worthington bats with a pair of singles. Brooklyn Bretzman and Victoria Bush had the other hits for WHS.

In high school baseball, Pipestone Area used an eight-run inning to beat host Worthington 14-8.
The Arrows led the Trojans, now 2-12, by just 10-8 after six innings, but got four in the seventh to move more comfortably ahead.

The Worthington Cubs were defeated in amateur baseball on Wednesday night by the visiting Windom Pirates, 13-3. They'll host the Milroy Yankees tonight following the Trojans' game.
