The Worthington Trojans softball team took on visiting St. Peter in a Big South Conference doubleheader on Thursday, and the Saints swept the twinbill by scores of 14-2 and 13-2. The games were switched from Centennial Park to the Lady Jays Softball Complex.
In the opening game, St. Peter scored one run on three hits in the top of the first inning, but the Trojans got even without the benefit of the hit in the bottom of the first. The score remained 1-1 until the top of the fourth, when the Saints tallied four unearned runs thanks to a pair of WHS errors to move in front 5-1. The Trojans quickly got one back, as Hannah McNab led off with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth.
The sixth inning, however, proved to be a long one for Worthington, as St. Peter picked up six runs on eight hits to increase their lead. The Saints, who finished the game with 21 total hits, added three more in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring. WHS had five hits in the contest, including two each from Bailey Ponto and Marin Pederson.
In game two, St. Peter – the home team on the scoreboard this time – scored two runs in the first and then got six in the second to take control early. The Saints led 9-0 after three, and the Trojans followed with two in the fourth. Both Maddie Petersen and Marin Pederson had hits in that inning.
St. Peter got four runs across in the bottom of the fourth and the Trojans failed to score in the top of the fifth, ending the game via the 10-run rule. Ponto and Marin Pederson each had two more hits for WHS, which again had five total in the game. St. Peter, meanwhile, had 13 hits.
The Trojans are now 3-8 on the season; St. Peter is 8-5. WHS plays at Marshall next Monday.
