Emergency services were called to Quentin Aanenson Field-Luverne Municipal Airport on Friday following the crash of a small plane.
According to a Rock County Sheriff's Office press release, the office received a 911 call at 10:19 a.m. Friday reporting that a small yellow plane attempted to land, crashed and was sitting on its roof. The call was unable to report if anyone was injured or how many occupants were on the plane.
Emergency units were immediately dispatched to respond to the incident. This included units from the Rock County Sheriff's Office, Luverne Fire Department and the Rock County (Sanford) Ambulance. The Federal Aviation Administration was contacted as well.
The first arriving units were able to report that the two occupants of the plane were out walking around and not injured. The occupants were checked out by the ambulance personnel and refused transport.
The occupants of the plane were instructor pilot Leigh Smith, 65, of Knox, Ind., and the student pilot was Jeremia Nicholson, 30, of Humbolt, S.D. According to the AA, the plane was a 1976 Cessna A185F, fixed wing single-engine owned by TS 185 LLC of Sioux Falls.
It was reported that they were making practice landings at the airport. The weather conditions at the time of the crash were light rain with cross winds.
