MANKATO –- The Minnesota Department of Transportation continues to closely monitor state highways in south central and the southwest corner of Minnesota due to flooding caused by recent heavy rains.
MnDOT reopened Minnesota 22 just south of St. Peter today, (June 29).
U.S. 169 from Le Sueur to St. Peter also opened to traffic today. Northbound U.S. 169, just north of Le Sueur, remains reduced to one lane near the temporary dike MnDOT crews placed earlier this week to hold back floodwaters. There is also 7-ton weight restriction on U.S. 169 from Le Sueur to Union Street in St. Peter for approximately one week.
All entrance and exit ramps at U.S. 169/60 to the Lookout Drive/Center Street area in North Mankato reopened today. They had been closed since June 24 as the city of North Mankato constructed an earthen dike in this area.
Eastbound Minnesota 60 from Worthington to Heron Lake opened today; however, the westbound lanes are still under water and remain closed to traffic.
Motorists should expect delays July 1-2 on Minnesota 22 approximately six miles south of Mankato (near the Le Sueur River). Crews will place rip-rap (rock) to protect embankment near the river that was damaged by heavy rains and flooding. Drivers should watch for flaggers and a pilot car, and drive with caution in this area.
MnDOT is working hard to open highways that have been impacted by flooding as soon as it’s safe to do so. We appreciate the public’s patience as we work through this. There are several roads that are still under water, and it will be a slow process to reopen them after the flood waters recede. We also anticipate there may be damage to some of these highways and repairs will be necessary. Highways and bridges impacted by floods need to be inspected for damage and safety prior to opening.
Motorists should check www.511mn.org for current information and follow posted detour routes.
