Man killed in World War II to be buried Wednesday in Jackson

Jackson native Thomas Ruth, who died while on an aerial mission in the Pacific during World War II, will be buried with full military honors in Jackson on Wednesday.

The burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery, 300 U.S. 71 S., at 11 a.m.

Ruth’s plane was believed to have crashed in the jungle east of Lambeti Plantation, which is about one-half of a mile from the beach along the north bank of Roviana Lagoon, Munda Island. After missing for about two and a half years, Ruth was declared dead in January 1946.

In 2013, an investigation team found a Wildcat crash site. Remains found inside the crashed plane were thought to be “reasonably associated” with Ruth. Those same remains were later analyzed in a laboratory and compared with family reference samples. A positive identification of Ruth was made in April 2025.
