Minnesota West hoops teams fall at Iowa Central

Iowa Central Community College pulled away in the second half Wednesday night, outscoring visiting Minnesota West 55-29 on its way to an 82-54 victory over the Bluejays in a non-conference men’s basketball game in Fort Dodge, Iowa.


Iowa Central led by just two, 27-25, at halftime before going to expand its advantage thanks to a 24-2 run. Minnesota West shot just 34 percent from the field for the game and committed 26 turnovers in the defeat, though the Jays did win the rebounding battle 45-42.


Amos Alford was the leading scorer for Minnesota West, collecting 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting. He also had a pair of steals and pulled down four rebounds. CJ Ligon contributed 10 points for Minnesota West, while Tyvorus Lawton had eight rebounds and Bubba Sohn seven rebounds.


Iowa Central, meanwhile, shot 44 percent from the floor and turned the ball over just 12 times. The Tritons have a record of 5-1 on the season.


In women’s basketball, Minnesota West was outscored 21-4 in the opening quarter and went on to drop a 69-49 decision to 5-0 Iowa Central. The Lady Jays found themselves trailing by 30 entering the fourth quarter before closing the gap somewhat in the final minutes.


Minnesota West hurt itself by shooting 30 percent from the field and turning the ball over 30 times. Hunter Garcia led the way in scoring for the Lady Jays with 13 points. Dannyn Peterson added 10 points to go along with 11 rebounds, and Mackensie Post chipped in with 10 points.


The Minnesota West women will play next at Iowa Lakes Community College on Tuesday. The men will play at the Dakota State junior varsity on Friday night.
