Lady Jays go 2-0 on weekend; WHS boys win hoop debut

The Minnesota West Lady Jays completed a perfect 2-0 weekend on the basketball court with a 102-65 triumph Saturday over Gogebic Community College. Olivia Hayenga, last week’s NJCAA Player of the Week, starred once again by finishing with a triple double, scoring 25 points to go along with 15 rebounds, 11 assists, five steals and four blocked shots. Fellow Worthington High School grad Dasia Potter added 20 points for the Lady Jays. Also scoring in double figures were Hattie DeVries with 18, Audrey Drapeau 14 and Skyla Peterson 13.

On Friday, Minnesota West blitzed Central Lakes for a 31-point third quarter and topped the Raiders 85-45. Hayenga had 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in that contest. DeVries and Potter chipped in with 13 points each, and Casey Miller added 11.

In men’s basketball, Minnesota West trailed 39-38 at halftime before posting an 87-73 win over Gogebic, snapping a five-game losing skid. Jordan Sinclair also passed for eight assists as the Bluejays improved to 2-6.

The Worthington Trojans boys basketball team built a 20-point halftime lead and then held on from there Saturday to post a 73-71 road victory over St. Peter in the Trojans’ opening game of the season.

The Trojans were executed well against St. Peter’s man-to-man defense to build their big lead, but the Saints threw some different looks at WHS in the second half, Worthington head coach Clint Meyer said. St. Peter, which had its only lead of the game at 3-2, had an opportunity to tie or win the game with 3.3 seconds to go, but the Trojans forced a turnover with two seconds left to seal the deal.

Zach Hayenga led Worthington in scoring Saturday with 21 points. Fellow seniors Kaleb Knothe and Andrew Mulder added 17 and 14 points, respectively.

On the girls side, New Prague dominated Worthington in the first half and led 48-4 at the break on the way to a 71-33 victory. A total of 13 different New Prague players scored in the game. For Worthington, Jayden Spartz had 10 points and New Gora nine. WHS is now 0-3 on the season.

In high school hockey this past weekend, Worthington lost on the road on both Friday and Saturday. The Trojans were edged 3-1 by Prairie Centre on Friday night and then dropped a 6-1 decision to Detroit Lakes on Saturday.

An unassisted goal by Peyton Nickel of WHS with a little more than a minute and half to go in the Prairie Centre game made the score 2-1, but the home tallied an empty-net goal moments later to ice things. On Saturday, the Trojans got their lone goal of the day from Marin Pederson in the second period. Goaltender Macie Malhberg made 52 saves for Worthington, which is now 0-4.
