The Fairmont Cardinals scored touchdowns on their first seven possessions Friday night and went on to defeat Worthington 49-9 at Trojan Field.
Fairmont running back Elijah Johnson dominated the first half. His TD from 13 yards out gave the Cardinals a 7-0 edge, and he then got in the end zone again from 21 yards out for a 14-0 lead.
After a quick pass from Fairmont QB Joe Long to wide receiver Tavian Harvey resulted in a 47-yard touchdown, Johnson went on to add three more scores, hitting paydirt of runs of 26, 51 and 45 yards. The Cardinals were up 42-0, and WHS would get on the board in the third quarter when Jacari Swinea capped a drive of more than seven a half minutes with a one-yard run. Alex Galvez added a 22-yard fourth-quarter field goal for the Trojans.
Swinea carried 23 times for 100 yards in the game, and fellow Worthington running back Kevin Ramirez contributed 11 rushes for 84 yards. Trojan quarterbacks Isaiah Schroeder and Ayden Stugelmeyer combined to complete five passes to five different receivers. Defensively, Chase Byrne led the way with six total tackles; Dawson Svalland and Permeye Okony each forced fumble and Fino Noeno recovered a fumble.
Worthington, now 1-6, plays its last game of the regular season Wednesday at 3-4 St. Peter.
