Area sports briefs: Dec. 4, 2024

The Minnesota West wrestling team competed at the Buena Vista University Open this past weekend in Storm Lake. Among the Bluejays who wrestled at the event were Ian Johnson, who placed sixth at 157 pounds; Deante Porter, who placed eighth at 197 pounds; and Dayveon Hill, who was the Consolation B Champion.

Bluejays coach Brayden Curry said that overall, it was a competitive day of wrestling on Saturday, and that his team has shown a lot of improvement over the last month. Up next is a dual at North Iowa Area Community College on Wednesday and a triangular dual between Southwest Minnesota State University and Ridgewater College on Friday.

Minnesota West will host its lone home dual of the year at 7 p.m. Dec. 15 against Iowa Lakes Community College. It will also be Youth Wrestling Appreciation Night, so all youth wrestlers wearing their club's T-shirt will be granted free admission to the dual.

Jackson County Central has the No. 1 spot in the most recent Guillotine High School Class A Wrestling Team rankings. Among those not listed among the top 12 teams but included in the "Lean and Mean" category are Adrian and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton.

The Worthington Hockey Association's 10u girls team placed third in this past weekend's home tournament. The 12u girls team, meanwhile, earned a fourth-place finish in their tourney.

Eagan captured the 10u bracket and Redwood Falls won the 12u bracket. Play in the tournaments took place on Saturday and Sunday.
