Worthington Jr. Legion ousted from tourney after marathon Tuesday win

The Worthington Junior American Legion baseball team wrapped up its season Wednesday by falling to host Marshall 11-3 at the substate tournament.

Post 5 coach Tucker Sorenson commended his team after the game for going out and competing hard Wednesday despite being a bit shorthanded. That came about following a long Tuesday in which Worthington went 11 innings to earn a victory over Mankato American.

In that Tuesday win, the score was tied at eight-apiece entering the top of the 11th, but Worthington scored six runs and went on to ultimately claim a 14-8 triumph. Keagan McCuen brought home the first run of the frame with an RBI single, and Jordan Thill later added the big blow of the inning with a two-run double.

McCuen and Thill each collected three hits for Post 5 and drove in two runs apiece. Talan Turner and Kaden Khamphanh each collected multiple hits for Worthington, which collected a total of 13 and earned seven walks in the contest. McCuen stole two bases. The team turned one double play in the game.

McCuen also earned the pitching win for Worthington, surrendering nine hits and seven runs over five innings while striking out three and walking four. Turner pitched six innings in relief, allowing four hits and one run while striking out five and walking three. 

Post 5 was later defeated 8-3 by New Prague on Tuesday night, setting the stage for its loser-out substate tourney game Wednesday against Marshall. Worthington's Junior Legion team finished the summer with an overall record of 13-13-1.
