The Worthington Trojans' girls basketball season came to a end in New Ulm as the second-seeded Eagles downed the seventh-seeded Trojans 87-42 Wednesday night in a Section 2AAA quarterfinal matchup.
New Ulm got out of the gate quickly and never trailed in the game. After the Eagles and WHS traded a free throw apiece, New Ulm went on 12-0 run for a 13-1 advantage. Saige Scheepstra got a Trrojan hoop on a putback to put a halt to the Eagles' surge, but New Ulm then tallied the next seven points for a 20-3 lead, and Worthington called for time with 11:50 remaining before halftime.
WHS senior Jayden Spartz hit a couple of 3-pointers in the first half and Madison Sieve had one as well as the Trojans were down 49-24 at the half. Worthington and New Ulm played evenly for a good part of the second half, but after a Sieve layup with about 10 minutes remaining made it 66-40, the Eagles ran off 15 points in a row before reserve Joy Knuckles broke the drought with a hoop.
Spartz led the Trojans in scoring in her final high school basketball game, as she had 18 points. Sieve was next with nine points. Scheepstra, Grace Barber and Grace Bates also played in their last games for the Trojans. Scheepstra had seven points and Barber and Bates had three each. WHS finished the year at 2-25.
