Adrian-Ellsworth, Sibley-Ocheyedan split girls/boys hoops doubleheader

The Sibley-Ocheyedan Generals and Adrian-Ellsworth Dragons played through a tight battle for most of Monday's boys basketball game, but the Generals got some breathing room late and then held on for a 50-44 victory in Sibley.


The game was tied at just 9-9 after the first quarter, and the Generals would lead by as many as seven in the second quarter before taking a 24-18 edge into the locker room at halftime. Sibley-Ocheyedan led 31-24 in the latter stages of the third quarter, but the Dragons closed to within 31-29 heading into the fourth.


Senior A-E guard Darwin Demarrias-Jansma promptly connected on his fourth 3-point bucket of the game to move the Dragons up by one, 32-31. The teams went back and forth until Dawson Kreykes' hoop put the Generals ahead, 39-37, and they would lead the rest of the way.


Alex Kruger paced S-O, now 7-4, with 18 points, and Gavin Stanton contributed 13. Demarrias-Jansma had five 3-pointers and 17 points to lead the Dragons, now 2-9. 


In the girls game, it was Adrian-Ellsworth taking control early on as they built a 31-point halftime advantage and went on to defeat the Generals 81-37.


Shandra Cuperus, who surpassed the career 1,000-point mark in her last game, scored 26 points Monday. Keyona Klingenberg added 18 points, and Ava Brown had 10. Lucy Heitritter scored 11 for S-O, now 2-9; Aleah Marco was next with nine.

Visiting Marshall snapped a 1-1 second period tie with four consecutive goals and the Tigers went on to beat the Worthington Trojans 7-3 in boys hockey action Monday night.


After a scoreless first period, Marshall scored just 19 seconds into the second. Colby Darling would then get the equalizer for WHS at 2:39 on an assist from Noahh Hohenstein.


The Tigers then went on to score three goals within 29 seconds of each other and then added one more a little more than a minute later for a four-goal cushion. Hohenstein later netted an unassisted Trojan goal at 7:58 for a 5-2 margin.


Marshall tacked on two goals in the third period before Trey Milbrath scored for Worthington on assists from Darling and Dominic Pavelko. The Tigers, who outshot the Trojans 37-18, improved to 4-10 on the season; Worthington is 2-13.

In girls basketball Monday night, visiting Westbrook-Walnut Grove led 25-20 at the half and went on to earn a 57-50 triumph over Worthington.


Leah Carter scored 20 points for the 7-6 Chargers, with 14 of those coming in the second half. For the Trojans, Savannah Dale led the charge with 16 points while Alaina Feit had 13 and Paula Dykstra nine. WHS is 2-12.
