WHS competes in golf, track and field openers

The Worthington Trojans’ girls golf team won its season-opener Monday against Western Christian, earning a 219-242 triumph in Hull, Iowa.


Madison Beckmann was the medalist for WHS with a score of 53. Mia Nixon also shot a 53, but Beckmann won the handicap tiebreaker. Also scoring for the Trojans were Kendall Nixon and Tarren Spartz, who each carded rounds of 58.


The Trojan boys, meanwhile, had Logan Powers shoot a 38 to earn medalist honors, but WHS was defeated 166-178 by Western Christian. The Trojans’ other scoring rounds Monday afternoon came from Tyler Jaycox, Andrew Mulder and Spenser Braaksma, who shot 45, 46 and 49, respectively.

The Worthington boys and girls track teams kicked off their seasons Monday at the Luverne Invitational. On the girls side, Southwest Minnesota Christian-Edgerton finished first with 97 points. Worthington came out on top in the boys competition with 102.5 points.


Marenono Opiew was first in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the high jump for the Trojans. Also earning first-place finishes for WHS were Abagotte Opiew in the 200 meters, Filmon Wolday in the 1600, and the 4x800 meter relay team of Mason Bobb, Filmon Wolday, Fanuel Wolday and Mikele Walu.


The WHS girls, who finished fourth with 47 points, had first-place efforts from Brooklyn Scheitel-Taylor in both the 200 meters and triple jump. Also triumphant was the 4 x100 meter relay quartet of New Gora, Bailey Newman, Addison Gerber and Scheitel-Taylor.
