The Worthington High School boys soccer team will look to earn its third victory in three tries against Marshall on Tuesday night when it hosts the Tigers in a Section 2AA quarterfinal match at Trojan Field.
The Trojans have an overall record of 11-4-1 this fall and are seeded fourth in the sectional tournament. Mankato East has the top seed and will host eighth-seeded Jordan at 4 p.m. Other tourney matchups Tueday have No. 2 Westonka entertaining No. 7 Hutchinson at 6 p.m. and No. 3 New Ulm hosting No. 6 Mankato West at 5 p.m.
Worthington is looking to get back to the state tournament for the fourth time in five seasons. Its three-year streak was snapped last year by Marshall, which knocked off the Trojans in the sectional semifinals after each squad beat each other on the road during the regular season.
This year, WHS has fared well against the Tigers while outscoring them 5-1 over their two matches.
In a match that began early and ended early due to lightning, Worthington edged visiting Marshall 2-0 back on Sept. 2. Andy Guzman scored both of the Trojans' goals, the first coming with 17:04 left before halftime and the other with 3:55 remaining before the break.
WHS and the Tigers met again on Sept. 18, and the Trojans were victorious 3-1. Head coach Juan Flores commented after that match that his squad didn't play well in the first half, as the Trojans had difficulty connecting passes and was kept in the match by its defense. All three Trojan goals came in the second half, as Cristobal Lopez, Eiby Martin and Danny Banegas each scored.
Tuesday's match begins at 7 p.m. You can catch the action on 104.3 La Voz.
