Trojans place second in girls golf meet in Windom

The Worthington High School girls golf team placed second of four schools in a Big South meet Monday in Windom.


Redwood Valley won the meet with a team total of 184 strokes. The Trojans were next at 196, and Marshall and Luverne were tied at 215.


Madison Beckmann had the low round for WHS with a 47, which placed her in a tie for fifth place. Redwood Valley’s Mila Jenniges was medalist with a round of 39.


Rounding out the scoring for the Trojans were Tarren Spartz with a 49 and Ellie Weg and Mia Nixon with 50s. Lilly Mahlberg shot a 52 for the Trojans and Claire Mahlberg had a 54.

In boys golf Monday, it was Windom Area edging host Luverne 168-169 in a six-team Big South meet. Worthington was fifth with a score of 200.


Carter Rossow of Windom Area and Owen Sudenga of Luverne tied for medalist honors, each shooting 39. Tyler Jaycox had the low round for the Trojans with a 44, which placed him in a tie for 10th overall.


Also competing for WHS on Monday were Spenser Nickel, who carded a 51; Spenser Braaksma, who has a 52; Andrew Mulder, at 53; and Wesley Widboom, at 54.

In high school baseball Monday, the Luverne Cardinals scored four runs in the bottom of the second and four more in the third on their way to a 12-1 five-inning win over visiting Worthington.


The Trojans got their only run of the game in the fifth to make it 10-1, but the Cardinals scored twice in the bottom of the inning to end it. WHS got just two hits, with Max Ostrem doubling and scoring the lone run and Mason Schutz adding a single. Tucker Brandner was the starting pitcher and took the loss. The Trojans host Marshall at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
