Trojans girls team gets another win, shuts out Red Wing

The Worthington Trojans girls hockey team picked up their fifth triumph in their last six games Saturday by posting a 4-0 win over Red Wing at the Worthington Ice Arena.


The Trojans scored twice in the first period and once more in both the second and third as they improved to 5-6 overall on the season. WHS finished 5-17-1 last year.


Sydnie Van Briesen scored the first Worthington goal on an assist from Madllyn Polz, and Breeta Johnson got the second on a feed from her sister Audrey Johnson. Chloe Jones scored unassisted in the second period, and Kiley Platt picked a power-play goal in the third on a pass from Victoria Bush. Macie Mahlberg stopped all 24 shots she faced for the Trojans, who put 25 shots on net.

The Trojans' girls basketball team hosted Southwest Minnesota Christian on Friday night and were defeated by the Eagles, 65-49.


WHS trailed 38-25 at halftime and then quickly fell behind by 19 early in the second half. Madison Sieve nailed her second 3-pointer of the night to make the score 49-38, but the Eagles responded to build an advantage of as much of 23 points.


Sieve paced the Trojans offensively with 14 points, while Savannah Dale added 10 and Claire Schultz nine. Victoria Prins led the Eagles in the scoring column with 21 points. Both teams are now 2-3 on the year.

In WHS boys basketball, it was Hutchinson defeating the visiting Trojans on Friday night, 70-56.


Treyson Meinders led Worthington with 23 points, with 20 of those coming in the first half. The Trojans trailed 40-26 after the first 18 minutes in falling to 1-3 on the season.

Austin Kinser chipped in with 11 points for WHS, Isaiah Schroeder added nine and Thet Tay scored eight.

Dominic Larson placed second at 107 pounds and Sam Dagel was also second at 114 to lead Worthington's wrestling team at the Pizza Ranch meet Saturday at Jackson County Central. Also placing for the Trojans were Jace Riemersma-Feit, fourth at 121; Austin Gruis, fourth at 189; and Bly Scott, fifth at 114.


Among other area wrestlers, Fulda/Murray County Central's Kaston Clarke was first at 121 pounds, with teammates Quentin Lewis second at 160, Luke Iverson third at 189, Colby Kesterloot fourth at 285, Lucas Kuball fourth at 152, Vincent Bray fifth at 215 and Gabriel Wolske sixth at 285.


For Adrian Area, Jackson Jenniges earned first place at 160 pounds. Other Dragons placers were Jesse Bullerman, second at 189; Charger Erlandson, second at 152; and Travis Weiss, third at 133.

The Minnesota West Lady Jays picked up a pair of blowout basketball victories at home this past weekend, defeating Minnesota North College-Vermilion 101-55 on Friday and Minnesota North College-Mesabi Range 96-55 on Saturday.


In Friday's game, Katrina Schutz had game highs of 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead Minnesota West. Other leading scores were Sadie Krahling with 19 points, Payton Riemers with 17, Izzy Klumper with 11 and Maddie Kamm with 10. Klumper also contributed seven steals, as the Lady Jays forced 30 turnovers.


On Saturday, Riemers scored 21 points and Schutz added 17 and a game-best 15 rebounds. Klumper chipped in with 14 points, Krahling 13 and Ayla Texley 12 as Minnesota West, ranked third nationally, moved to 8-3 overall.


In men's basketball, the Bluejay men also won both games, as they topped Vermilion 99-69 and Mesabi Range 79-63.


Against Vermilion, Keion Irvin exploded for 40 points on 17-of-27 shooting from the floor. Kewone Jones added 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Da'Shaundis Moore had 10 points.


Against Mesabi Range, it was Jones who had a huge night offensively with 36 points while also sharing a team high in rebounds with Daniel Jones at seven. Irvin added 20 points as he and Jones combined for 56 of the Bluejays' 79 points. Minnesota West is also 8-3 this season.
