Trojans boys soccer rolls to 7-0 win over Austin

The WHS boys soccer team held a 1-0 edge over visiting Austin through the first half and then blitzed the Packers for six goals in the second half in winning 7-0 Saturday night at Trojan Field.


Charles Saydee and Carlos Castillo each scored two goals in the game and Christian Martinez, Maqui Sandoval and Luis Vela added a goal each as WHS moved to 5-1 on the season. Coach Juan Flores noted that the defense was solid and that it was the best all-around match his team has played so far this season.

In college football Saturday, it was visiting Mesabi Range blanking Minnesota West by a score of 35-0.


Emmanuel Allen Jr. caught TD passes of 22 and 28 yards from Jonathan Mosley and also returned a punt 79 yards for a score. Bluejays QB Breyer Hieronimus was under near continual pressure and finished 9-of-28 passing for 95 yards and an interception while being sacked six times. Joshua Yarbrough had four catches for 63 yards for Minnesota West, now 0-2. Defensively for the Jays, Tyler Lange-Baillie had 11 total tackles and Anjuan Higginbottom and Aidan Bradshaw 10 each.

The Trojans’ Fanuel Wolday had his school’s best finish Saturday at the Heartland Preview Cross Country Meet in Yankton, S.D., placing 16th in 16:04.1. Next for WHS was Austin Kinser, who was 100th in 17:39.4. in a meet that included teams from 26 schools. The Trojans were 16th. In the girls race, Madison Sieve was 143rd and Kenadie Thiner 144th for Worthington.

Jackson County Central built a 16-0 halftime lead on Worthington and then outscored the Trojans 27-0 in the second half to post a 43-0 high school football win Friday night in the WHS season home opener.


Seth Stai had a pair of 12-yard touchdown runs for JCC, now 2-0 this fall, and Brenan Runge hooked up with Bryson Powers on TD passes of 36 and 18 yards. Also scoring rushing TDs were Isaac Hesebeck from 16 yards out and backup QB Gage Johnson on a 42-yard scramble.


Stai ended the game with 130 yards rushing on 13 carries. The Huskies outgained the Trojans 430-71 as Worthington dropped to 0-2.

Also on Friday, the Minnesota West Lady Jays swept past host Riverland 3-0 by game scores of 25-18, 25-13, 25-18. Ella Kamrud had 11 kills, Ella Hesse added eight kills and 12 digs and Hattie DeVries contributed six kills, five blocks and one ace serve to lead Minnesota West. Kiarra Danielson had four ace serves for the Lady Jays and Courtney Moser 11 digs.


On Saturday, the Lady Jays stayed hot and picked up a 3-0 road victory over Western Technical College by scores of 25-13, 25-11, 25-13. DeVries had 11 kills and a pair of blocks, Kamrud added 10 kills and Hesse had eight kills and 20 digs. Lexi Schreuers, meanwhile, passed for a combined 65 set assists over the pair of matches. Minnesota West is now 10-1 this season.

The Worthington Trojans girls tennis team was in action on both Thursday and Saturday. WHS was defeated 7-0 on Thursday by Redwood Valley and 7-0 on Saturday by Austin.
