Trojans boys basketball team improves to 2-1

Kaleb Knothe scored 18 points Saturday afternoon, Abagotte Opiew contributed 13 points and Jacari Swinea had 12 to lead the Worthington Trojans boys basketball team to a 59-52 win over New Prague in the WHS gym.


WHS led by as many as 12 points in the first half before settling for a 34-27 halftime advantage. Worthington then moved ahead by 13 in the second half, but hot 3-point shooting from New Prague helped the guests close to within 52-49. Noah Washa had six 3’s in the game for New Prague – four in the second half – and led all scorers with 22 points.


With the win, Worthington is now 2-1 on the season. The next game for the Trojans boys will be at Windom on Tuesday evening.

The Worthington Trojans girls basketball team traveled to Vermillion, South Dakota and were handed a 62-37 loss by the Tanagers at the Dakota Dome.


The Trojans scored the first two points of the game, but Vermillion proceeded to go on a 16-0 surge before an Ellie Weg free throw broke the surge. Vermillion led 16-5 at the end of the first quarter and by 38-19 at the half, thanks to 23 points from Brooke Jensen in the initial two periods.


Vermillion continued to grow its lead in the second half in improving to 2-0- on the season. For Worthington, Madison Beckmann had a team-high 13 points and New Gora contributed 11.


The Trojans, who now have a record of 1-4 on the season, will play at New Prague on Tuesday.

Ethan Meyer turned in the highest placing by a Worthington Trojan wrestler at Saturday’s Redwood River Riot event in Redwood Falls, coming in eighth at 132 pounds.


More than 30 high school teams took part in Saturday’s event. Among the champions from regional schools were Eli Greenman of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at 113 pounds, Devin Carter of Tracy-Milroy Balaton at 132, Dylan Louwagie of Marshall at 138 and Carver Rohman of Fairmont/Martin County West at 160. Another outstanding effort was turned in by Windom/Mountain Lake’s Preston Xayachak, who took second at 106 pounds.


Worthington will host a triangular wrestling meet Tuesday beginning at 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Worthington girls and boys hockey games that had been scheduled for Saturday were postponed.
